Katashimo Winery, the oldest surviving winery in western Japan and the birthplace of tunnel-aged wines, lies amid vineyards dotted with century-old farmhouses that generations have cherished. From the late 1920s to the mid-1930s, Osaka was Japan’s leading grape-growing region, supporting as many as 119 wineries at its peak. Today, more than thirty traditional houses—each over a hundred years old—still stand around the estate, silently telling that story, while Katashimo Winery itself continues the legacy that began with a family-run vineyard.
